Well-being and Health: The Northern Finland Birth Cohort Studies is the epidemiological and longitudinal research program which aims to promote health and well-being of the population.

The prospective data collected from the Northern Finland forms a unique resource, allowing to study the emergence of diseases which can be based on genetic, biological, social or behavioural risk factors.

The studies are comprised of the two longitudinal cohorts of mothers living in the two northernmost provinces of Finland, Oulu and Lapland with expected dates of delivery falling in NFBC 1966 between Jan 1st - Dec 31st, 1966 and in NFBC 1986 between July 1st, 1985 and June 30th, 1986.

In both study populations, mothers and children have been followed up since mothers enrolled at their first antenatal clinic visit.

The research program is internationally well known and funded by e.g. the Academy of Finland, EU, NIH (USA) and The Wellcome Trust (UK).
